Hamilton, Bermuda—Mark Wheeler, a seasoned executive, Lloyd’s syndicate founder, and market-leading underwriter has joined Mosaic Insurance as Co-Chief Executive Officer.
Wheeler takes the helm alongside close colleague and fellow Bermuda-based CEO Mitch Blaser at the global specialty insurer, which launched in February. The company combines Lloyd’s Syndicate 1609 with a wholly-owned syndicated capital management agency and underwriting hubs in Bermuda, London, the US and Asia.
“Mark is a great friend and respected industry figure with a celebrated track record, and I’m thrilled to welcome him aboard as dual leader of our company,” said Co-CEO Blaser. “We are completely aligned in our vision for Mosaic’s culture and strategy for success, and it’s fantastic to be working together again.”
Wheeler has served in a variety of leadership roles, overseeing capital planning, underwriting and distribution during his more than three decades of industry experience across global markets and product lines. Notably, he was the founder of top-quartile Lloyd’s Syndicate 4000 and Pembroke Managing Agency, which was purchased in 2008 by Ironshore, where Blaser was a founding executive. Wheeler served as CEO of Ironshore International, managing creation of high-profile consortia and expansion to 14 countries. He later held executive roles in global client engagement and international markets for Liberty Mutual Group following its 2017 acquisition of Ironshore.
“Mark’s industry relationships and deep market knowledge are great assets to Mosaic’s highly specialised business lines,” said Dan Haspel, a Managing Director at Golden Gate Capital, Mosaic’s anchor investor. “We look forward to supporting Mark, Mitch and the rest of Mosaic’s enterprising team as they build a powerful platform to meet complex risks for clients, partners and stakeholders around the world.”
Focused on carefully selected insurance lines with global relevance and growth trends, Mosaic is assembling a team of leading underwriters to launch specialty products throughout 2021. To date, the company has begun underwriting war, terror and political violence coverage, as well as political risk liability, and cybersecurity, with additional product launches planned in coming months.
“I am so proud to be back in the Bermuda and Lloyd’s markets, working alongside Mitch again,” said Wheeler. “He and I share many common values and bring complementary skills to the fantastic team of people we serve.
“Mosaic is a highly discerning underwriting business with lead-market capabilities, and we are entirely focused on generating outstanding value for our clients,” Wheeler added. “It’s a true privilege to be working with this talented group of people, supported by all our stakeholders, including reinsurers and brokers with whom we enjoy fruitful, longstanding relationships.”
